5 meses viviendo en San Francisco, ¿qué diferencias hay con España?

Entre 2017 y 2022 viví en 5 países distintos 🌍 : Italia, Alemania, Reino Unido, Bélgica y España. Todos, países europeos 🇪🇺. Cada uno tiene su propio encanto, pero en todos me sentía como en casa 🏠. Europa era mi zona de comfort y no tenía pensado abandonarla.

Between 2017 and 2022, I lived in 5 European countries: Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Spain. All European countries. Each one has its own charm, but in all of them, I felt at home. Europe was my comfort zone, and I had no plans to leave it.

Pero en mayo de 2023 Pablo me dijo que nos teníamos que mudar a EEUU. Palidecí* cuando oí la noticia.

But in May 2023, Pablo told me that we had to move to the United States. I turned pale when I heard the news.

Palidecer = To turn pale, to be surprised

De pronto*, me imaginé viviendo en las afueras de una gran ciudad 🌇, comiendo comida basura*🍔 , conduciendo 🚙 a todas partes* y viviendo con miedo a las armas*🔫. Esos eran los estereotipos que yo tenía sobre EEUU y mucha gente me ha dicho que son ciertos, pero solo en algunas zonas.

Suddenly, I pictured myself living on the outskirts of a big city, eating fast food, driving everywhere, and living in fear of guns. Those were the stereotypes I had about the United States, and many people have told me that they are true, but only in certain areas.

De pronto = Suddenly

Comida basura = Fast food

A todas partes = Everywhere

Armas = Guns

Afortunadamente, yo vivo en San Francisco, donde estos clichés no son ciertos. Y la verdad es que soy muy feliz aquí.

Fortunately, I live in San Francisco, where these stereotypes are not true.And the truth is, I am very happy here.

PERO acabo de volver de España🇪🇸. Hemos pasado allí Año Nuevo y Reyes (al final del correo te cuento dónde estuve el 25 de diciembre 🧑🏼‍🎄🎄). En la despedida, lloré como una magdalena*. En el avión me puse a pensar en otras cosas que echo de menos de mi país y me di cuenta de que no son cosas típicas.

BUT I just returned from Spain🇪🇸. We spent New Year's and Epiphany there (I'll tell you where I was on December 25th 🧑🏼‍🎄🎄 at the end of the email ). During the farewell, I cried like a baby. On the plane, I started thinking about other things I miss from my country, and I realized they are not typical things.

Llorar como una magdalena = To cry like a baby

1. El jamón

Obvio, ¿no? También las croquetas y el cocido. Ambos son platos que no cocino en San Francisco porque no encuentro jamón a buen precio para hacerlos.

Of course, right? Also, croquetas and "cocido." Both are dishes I don't cook in San Francisco because I can't find affordable ham.

Y realmente el jamón es un problema, pues muchos supermecados pijos tienen buen jamón español… El

And really, ham is not a problem either, as many upscale supermarkets have good Spanish ham. So, someday I could treat myself.

2. Las persianas 🪟

Los americanos cubren las ventanas por dentro de la casa con “shades” o “blinds” . Pero ningún sistema sirve para bloquear la entrada de la luz.

Americans cover the windows inside their homes with "shades" or "blinds." However, neither is effective at blocking the entry of light.

Los españoles tenemos persianas, que se sitúan por fuera y permiten que el interior de la casa quede completamente a oscuras.

Spanish people have shutters, which are placed on the outside and allow the interior of the house to be completely dark.

Cuando llegué a EEUU, este tema lo llevaba peor* y me despertaba a las seis de la mañana, cuando amanecía. Ahora uso un antifaz* y ¡problema resuelto!

When I arrived in the United States, I struggled more with this issue and would wake up at six in the morning when it was getting light. Now, I use an eye mask* and problem solved!

3. Las leyes alimentarias

¿Qué? Sé que suena raro. Déjame explicarte. Los países europeos tienen muchas leyes que intentan proteger a sus ciudadanos.

What? I know it sounds strange. Let me explain. European countries have many laws that aim to protect their citizens.

Algunas leyes me parecen demasiado intrusivas, pero otras me parecen bien, como hacer que todos los cargadores de móvil sean iguales (noticia aquí).

Some laws seem too intrusive to me*, but others seem fine, like making all mobile phone chargers the same (news here).

Las leyes europeas que regulan la calidad de los alimentos también me gustan. La UE regula mejor el uso de hormonas y antibióticos en los animales. Estas sustancias aumentan el riesgo de contraer cancer, así que cuando estoy en España, como carne más tranquila. De hecho, me planteo* dejar de comerla en EEUU.

I also like the European laws regulating food quality. The EU better regulates the use of hormones and antibiotics in animals. These substances increase the risk of cancer, so when I'm in Spain, I eat meat more confidently. In fact, I am considering* giving up meat in the U.S. (*Note: "Me planteo" means "I am considering" or "I am thinking about.").

Mi Navidad

El día 25 de diciembre Pablo y yo estábamos en Nueva York. Los vuelos San Francisco - Madrid el 22 de diciembre eran muy caros, y nos salía mejor hacer una escala de 4 días en NYC. Tuvimos que felicitar la Navidad a nuestras familias por videollamada:

On December 25th, Pablo and I were in New York. The flights from San Francisco to Madrid on December 22nd were very expensive, and it was more cost-effective for us to have a layover of 4 days in NYC. We had to wish our families a Merry Christmas through video call
