Seguimos con nuestra pequeña serie sobre tres productos españoles: el aceite de oliva, el vino y el queso.
We continue with our small series about three products: olive oil, wine, and cheese.
En junio hablamos del aceite de oliva, un producto muy presente en cualquier cocina española. Hoy vamos con otro producto muy importante en España, Francia e Italia: el vino.
In June we talked about olive oil, a product that is very present in almost every Spanish kitchen. Today we are moving on to another very important product in Spain, France, and Italy: wine.
Y aquí pasa algo parecido a lo que vimos con el aceite: España produce muchísimo vino, pero muchas veces tengo la sensación de que Francia o Italia han sabido vender mejor su imagen internacional.
And here something similar happens to what we saw with olive oil: Spain produces a lot of wine, but I often feel that France or Italy have been better at selling their international image.
Cuando pensamos en vino francés, es fácil pensar en Burdeos, Borgoña o Champagne. Cuando pensamos en vino italiano, pensamos en Chianti, Barolo o Prosecco. Pero España también tiene muchísimas zonas vinícolas importantes: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rías Baixas, Priorat, Jerez, Penedés y muchas más.
When we think of French wine, it is easy to think of Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Champagne. When we think of Italian wine, we think of Chianti, Barolo, or Prosecco. But Spain also has many important wine regions: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rías Baixas, Priorat, Jerez, Penedès, and many more.

Vino tinto, hecho con uvas tintas.

La vid es la planta que produce las uvas.

2. Un viñedo - Vineyard
En muchas zonas de España, los viñedos forman parte del paisaje, igual que los olivos en Andalucía.
In many parts of Spain, vineyards are part of the landscape, just like olive trees in Andalusia.
La Rioja está llena de viñedos.
La Rioja is full of vineyards.
Visitamos un viñedo al atardecer.

3. La vendimia - grape harvest.
La vendimia empieza en septiembre.
The grape harvest begins in September.
Durante la vendimia, mucha gente trabaja en el campo.

1. Tomar una copa
Tomar una copa significa beber una copa de vino, cerveza, cóctel u otra bebida, normalmente en un contexto social.
Tomar una copa means to have a glass of wine, beer, a cocktail, or another drink, usually in a social context.
¿Tomamos una copa después de cenar?
Shall we have a drink after dinner?
Me apetece tomar una copa de vino.
I feel like having a glass of wine.
2. Brindar
Brindar significa levantar la copa y beber para celebrar algo o desear algo bueno.
Brindar means to raise your glass and drink to celebrate something or wish for something good.
Vamos a brindar por tu cumpleaños.
Let’s toast to your birthday.
Brindamos por el nuevo trabajo de Ana.
We toasted to Ana’s new job.

En España existe un objeto tradicional muy curioso relacionado con el vino: el porrón.
In Spain, there is a very curious traditional object related to wine: the porrón.
Un porrón es un recipiente de vidrio con un pitorro largo y fino que se usa para beber vino sin tocar el recipiente con la boca.
A porrón is a glass container with a long, thin spout used to drink wine without touching the container with your mouth.
Para beber de un porrón, tienes que levantarlo, inclinarlo y dejar caer el vino directamente en la boca. Parece fácil, pero no lo es.
To drink from a porrón, you have to lift it, tilt it, and let the wine fall directly into your mouth. It looks easy, but it is not.
Tradicionalmente se usaba mucho en comidas familiares, fiestas populares y reuniones informales, porque varias personas podían beber del mismo recipiente sin compartir vaso.
Traditionally, it was often used at family meals, popular festivals, and informal gatherings, because several people could drink from the same container without sharing a glass.
Hoy en día no se usa tanto en la vida cotidiana, pero sigue siendo un objeto muy reconocible de la cultura popular española.
Nowadays, it is not used so much in everyday life, but it is still a very recognizable object in Spanish popular culture.
What an excellent program. I'm studying Spanish myself at this time, actually, not Spanish from Spain, but Spanish from Central America and South America.
