This year, I'm not going to teach you vocabulary related to Christmas. A few years ago, I already did it, talking about this celebration in Spain with my friend Miguel.
Don't worry, you're going to learn Spanish in this email because I'm going to highlight* some words (you'll see their meanings in point 3).
Actually, I want to talk about any celebration that involves gathering with family and/or friends. And this happens in all cultures.
1. MULTICULTURALIDAD.
Living in San Francisco, I've become aware of the great variety of cultures and religions that exist in the world.
I grew up in Spain, a predominantly Catholic country, so Christmas has always been the quintessential family celebration.
Pero existen tantas fiestas en otras culturas…
Diwali
Hanukkah
Thanksgiving
But there are so many celebrations in other cultures... And they all have something in common; they are celebrated with other people.
LAS RELACIONES HUMANAS.
La vida se basa en conexiones humanas.
Life is based on human connections.
A mí tampoco.
"Irene, but I don't like being with a lot of people." Me neither.
I don't like parties. I prefer to have coffee with 2-3 people because I understand the conversation better. When there is music and a lot of noise, I don't understand anything.
Adoro a mis amigos, pero NO ME GUSTA VERLOS TODOS LOS DÍAS. Y esto es difícil cuando eres española.
I love my friends, but I DON'T LIKE SEEING THEM EVERY DAY. And this is difficult when you're Spanish.
¿Soy tímida? No, porque disfruto hablando con la gente.
Am I shy? No, because I enjoy talking to people.
I recently discovered that I'm introverted. It means that I recharge my energy when I'm alone. Extroverts, on the other hand, recharge their batteries* by being with people.
However, at Christmas, I really enjoy being with my family, and it's also a way to recharge my energy.
Maybe I like it because in my family, we are only 4 people 😅😂 or because we always have big feasts*."
VOCABULARIO
Destacar = To highlight
Recargar las pilas = To recharge the batteries
Pegarse una comilona = To have a feast
FELIZ NAVIDAD
O mejor dicho: ¡Felices Fiestas!
If you don't celebrate Christmas and instead celebrate something else at another time of the year, I congratulate you in advance.
