Since August 2023, I have been living in San Francisco, California 🌉 🇺🇸.
Most of the people I know work at one of these three places:
a) en mi colegio -obviamente- ; at my school - obviously -
b) en Google, Meta o alguna empresa ENORME; at Google, Meta, or some HUGE company
c) en una start-up; at a startup.
In Spain, option 'c' is not very common. In the United States, there are more startups than in Spain, but today I'll tell you the story of VICIO and Heura. Both of them sell hamburgers.
Today, I'm also giving a different format to this newsletter. I'll let you know if I like it.
No sé.
Do Spaniards prefer hamburgers over paella? I don't know. It's difficult to speak on behalf of all Spaniards.
But a burger in Spain is slightly different from the burgers I see in the United States:
US: beef (adult cow) - Spain: veal (cow between eight and 12 months)
EEUU: hamburguesas grandes (225 gramos) - España: pequeñas (150 gramos)
US: large burgers (225 grams) - Spain: small ones (150 grams)
In both countries, you can eat a burger at fast-food restaurants like McDonald's. The quality of these chains is questionable (although according to this American, McDonald's is better in Spain).
In Spain, you can also enjoy a burger at VICIO and Heura. Both offer higher-quality burgers than McDonald's.
One difference: VICIO sells meat burgers, while Heura offers vegetarian ones.
One similarity: both are startups that secure funding through their customers.
Sí. En 23 minutos, VICIO consiguió 1 millón de euros. Pero, ¿por qué hicieron crowdfunding? ¿No encontraban inversores? ¿Estaban desesperados*?
Yes. In 23 minutes, VICIO raised 1 million euros. But why did they do crowdfunding? Couldn't they find investors? Were they desperate?
No one has the answer, but experts believe it's pure marketing. It's something innovative, cool, and hip, just like their ads. These companies want to connect with young people. How do they do it?
